Greater Omaha Packing Company, Inc. Honored With AMI's 1999 Edward C. Jones Community Service Award

Greater Omaha Packing Company, Inc., of Omaha, NE, today was honored by the American Meat Institute (AMI) with the Edward C. Jones Community Service Award for outstanding service to the people of Omaha and the citizens of Nebraska. The award was given to Greater Omaha President Henry Davis at Worldwide Food Expo ’99, October 28-31, 1999, at Chicago’s McCormick Place.

The Edward C. Jones Award was named for former AMI Board Member Edward Jones of Jones Dairy Farm in Atkinson, WI, who was a model of community involvement.

The company has been a leader in helping educate and integrate its foreign born employees. Greater Omaha offers free English classes on site through its Citizen Benefit Program. In addition, the company pays the cost for its workers to apply for citizenship, assists in the application progress and rewards participants who have been naturalized with plaques and gift certificates to local restaurants.

As the Omaha World-Herald noted in an editorial, “The company shows respect for workers and a positive approach to keeping them.”

“These efforts have the added benefit of stabilizing the local community and helping employees can more easily integrate and build long-term lives there,” said AMI Chairman Ken Taylor, president of Taylor Packing Company, Inc., in Wyalusing, PA.

Greater Omaha also has been a leader in promoting wellness through its Wellness Partnership, which brings key health experts into the company to promote wellness among employees and their families. As part of this effort, Greater Omaha created a health club in local Catholic church which is accessible not just to employees, but to parishoners as well.

Greater Omaha works extensively with the Nebraska Food Industry Partnership, a farm to table food safety initiative comprised of packers and processors, livestock producers and retailers. The group disseminates food safety information, organizes food
safety education booths at the state fair, trains school foodservice personnel and supplies thermometers to help consumers ensure proper cooking. A member of
Greater Omaha’s senior management staff serves on the Board of the Partnership. Davis himself is a member of the Jewish Federation of Omaha’s Foundation Board of Trustees and is Chairman of the Enterprise Association Board, which works to develop Omaha’s enterprise zone. He is a Board member of American National Bank and a
member of Governor Johanns’ Advisory Task Force for the State of Nebraska.

“Greater Omaha’s progressive efforts truly are a model for this industry,” Taylor said.
