Canadian Feedban Being Effectively Implemented

Friday, February 25, 2005

The following statement should be attributed to American Meat Institute Foundation President, James Hodges

“As expected, the U.S.D.A. has found that the livestock feedban in Canada is being effectively implemented and monitored and is working to ensure that BSE is not being spread in the Canadian herd. We are pleased that USDA quickly dispatched a team to Canada to verify that the Canadian firewalls against BSE were indeed intact, thus ensuring that the March 7th date to reopen most beef and cattle trade with Canada remains on track.

Because Canada has taken nearly identical measures to the U.S. to detect and deter BSE, we continue to maintain that all Canadian cattle and beef should be eligible for import into the United States. To that end, we will continue to press our lawsuit (AMI vs. DeHaven and Johanns) to ensure that this goal is eventually actualized.”
