Institute Honors Annual Environmental Award Recipients

HOLLYWOOD, Fla., – More than 100 meat packing and processing plants were honored for their environmental stewardship efforts at the American Meat Institute’s (AMI) second annual Environmental Recognition Awards Program. The awards were given at AMI’s Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase, Oct. 4-6, 2006, in Hollywood, Fl.

“The strong participation in this program shows that the industry is committed to achieving continued improvement in environmental management,” said AMI President and CEO J. Patrick Boyle. “The program requires companies to assess their own environmental challenges and to develop unique solutions that will encourage continuous improvement,” he said.

The Institute also honored 12 plants with the first annual Environmental Achievement Awards. Introduced this year as a way to honor continued achievement in environmental stewardship, the Achievement Awards celebrate plants that go beyond the program’s environmental compliance requirements in five categories. This year’s award winners include:

Environmental Outreach to the Public:
1. Cargill Foods – Dayton, Va.
2. Smithfield Foods, Inc. – Plant City, Fla.

Pollution Prevention:
1. Smithfield Foods, Inc. – Smithfield Transportation – Smithfield, Va.
2. Alma Foods, LLC – Alma, Kan.

Resource Conservation:
1. Smithfield Foods, Inc. – Sun Land Beef – Taliesin, Ariz.
2. Smithfield Foods, Inc. – Packerland Packing – Green Bay, Wisc.
2. Smithfield Foods, Inc. – Gwaltney of Smithfield – Smithfield, Va.

Sustainability:
1. Smithfield Foods, Inc. – Smithfield Transportation – Tar Heel, N.C.
2. Smithfield Foods, Inc. – Smithfield Packing – Landover, Md.

Training Programs:
1. Hormel Foods – Austin, Minn.
2. Smithfield Foods, Inc. – Corporate Environmental Affairs
2. Tyson Foods, Inc. – Sedalia, Mo.

“The steps taken by these plants demonstrate innovative strategies that have produced measurable in the environment,” Boyle noted. “They are a model for the industry as a whole and have great application for other plants.”

Some of the honorees unique efforts include:

• Hormel Foods’ (Austin, Minn.) biannual Plant Engineering Conference
• Sun Land Beef’s (Tolleson, Ariz.) efforts to reduce energy, recycle water and eliminate the use of groundwater.
• Smithfield Transportation’s (Tar Heel, N.C.) switch to compressed nitrogen to extend the life of tires,
• Smithfield Transportation’s (Smithfield, Va.) use of a fuel additive to decrease fuel emissions
• Cargill’s (Dayton, Va.) partnership with ecology classes from a nearby high school in Bridgewater, Va. to restore a local creek.

Nearly 40 plants were honored with the distinction of the top Recognition Award. The Recognition Awards, which are divided between four tiers to guide plants through the stages of an environmental management program, conclude with an international inspection and ISO 140001 certification.

“The Environmental Achievement and Recognition Awards Program proves we are moving this industry forward and ensuring that we make positive steps toward improving and sustaining the environment we live and work in,” said Boyle.
