American Meat Institute Honors Burke Corporation With 2003 Edward C. Jones Community Service Award

Chicago - The American Meat Institute (AMI) tonight honored Burke Corporation of Nevada, Iowa, with the Edward C. Jones Community Service Award. The award was announced during the 2003 Chairman's Gala at the Field Museum in Chicago.

The Edward C. Jones Community Service Award is presented annually to a company that exhibits the same commitment to community service as the late Ed Jones of Jones Dairy Farm.

Burke Corporation and its President Bill Burke Jr. have made substantial contributions of money and time to the Nevada, Iowa, community. Burke Corporation recently made the third contribution in a five-year commitment to the SCORE project, which is building Nevada, Iowa's athletic and sports complex.

More important than money is time. Burke employees are actively engaged in events like the Jaycees' community bike ride, the Summer Pops Concert, youth sports programs and Lincoln Highway Days. Burke also supports the Story County Hospital, the Leukemia Society of America, the United Negro College Fund, the American Heart Association, Red Cross and United Way. Needy people in the community also have come to rely on Burke's generosity at the local food pantry.

In addition, the company believes that community involvement is an essential corporate value and allows employees to volunteer on company time. The company's exemplary record of service was noted when President Bill Burke this summer was honored with the Nevada Chamber of Commerce Community Involvement Award.

"Burke Corporation and Bill Burke are models of community service," said AMI Chairman Richard Searer, group vice president, Kraft Foods North America and president, Oscar Mayer, Pizza & Food Service. "Tonight we join the citizens of Nevada, Iowa, in extending our thanks and appreciation."

Together, AMI's members produce 95 percent of the beef, pork, lamb and veal products and 70 percent of the turkey products in the United States.
