AMI Foundation Sodium Nitrite Advisory Committee Honored With 2000 Industry Advancement Award

Las Vegas, NV – The American Meat Institute Foundation’s Sodium Nitrite Advisory Committee today was honored with the American Meat Institute’s Industry Advancement Award, the highest award given by the association. The award was presented during AMI’s Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase, October 12-14, 2000, in Las Vegas, NV.

This was the first time that the award was presented to a committee affiliated with the Institute. The selection was made in recognition of the unusually difficult challenges faced by the committee and the successes it achieved.

In 2000, a National Toxicology Program Cancer Study of sodium nitrite was finalized and put before a review panel. At the same time, the State of California was considering nitrite for listing under the state’s Proposition 65 law, which requires
warning labels and placards for listed substances.

“The AMI Foundation’s Nitrite Advisory Committee was convinced that science validated the safety of nitrite and that the science could prevail if presented compellingly and completely to decisionmakers,” said AMI Chairman Greg Page, president and COO of Cargill, Inc., in presenting the award. “To meet these challenges, the AMI Foundation assembled some of the best minds in the field to provide their expertise. The group came together not just with phenomenal abilities, but with a passion for this issue.”

According to Page, key AMI members and consultants participated in planning meetings around the country, sat in on conference calls that lasted hours, stayed up nights reviewing hundreds of studies, translated some research from Japanese and reviewed pathology slides under microscopes.

“Through these tireless efforts, striking information was uncovered – information that led both the National Toxicology Program and California’s Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant Committee to conclude that nitrite is not only safe, but plays an essential role in protecting the public health.”

The effort was led by Committee Chairman Andrew Milkowski, Ph.D., senior technology principal at Kraft Foods Oscar Mayer Foods Division, who accepted the award on behalf of the committee.
