AMI Member Companies Donate More Than 3.1 Million Pounds of Meat and Poultry Products to Second Harvest Food Banks

AMI member companies in 1998 continued their commitment to alleviate hunger in America through donations of 3.1 million pounds of surplus meat and poultry to AMI’s “Meating the Need” program, a partnership with Second Harvest National Food Bank Network.

Second Harvest is the nation’s largest charitable feeding program. It consists of some 200 food banks nationwide serving nearly 50,000 charitable agencies such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters and church pantries.

Before AMI launched the Meating the Need program, annual meat donations averaged less than a million pounds nationwide and meat and poultry were among the products most desired and least available to people who use the services of Second Harvest.

During its ten-year history, the Meating the Need program has successfully coordinated more than thirty million pounds of meat and poultry donations to 50,000 charitable agencies across the nation.

The Meating the Need program has been instrumental in feeding the nation’s poor and hungry. In 1989, the project earned recognition from the White House with a C-Flag Award from the White House with a C-Flag Award the President’s Citation Program for Private Sector Initiatives.

AMI represents the interests of packers and processors of beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout North America. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Institute provides legislative, regulatory and public relations services, conducts scientific and economic research, offers marketing and technical assistance and sponsors education programs.

Second Harvest National Food Bank Network, a non-profit organization is the largest hunger relief organization in the U.S. It consists of 200 food banks nationwide serving nearly 50,000 charitable agencies such as homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and victims of natural disasters. Second Harvest distributes more than a billion pounds of donated food and grocery products annually.
