AMI FOUNDATION ANIMAL CARE AND HANDLING CONFERENCE SLATED FOR FEBRUARY 9-10 AT KANSAS CITY MARRIOTT

Washington, DC – The AMI Foundation Animal Care and Handling Conference for the food industry will be held Feb. 9-10 at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown, in Kansas City, Mo. The conference is by invitation to members of the food industry, restaurateurs, retailers, academics and others directly involved in the production and marketing of livestock and meat products.

The popular conference will feature three tracks this year: Management and Policy, Cattle Handling and Pig Handling. In addition, the conference will include an “Early Bird Beginners” session for members of the industry new to applied animal handling. Also included are two pre-conference workshops on Tuesday, Feb. 8: the National Pork Board’s Trucker Quality Assurance Program and a Cattle Transport Workshop hosted by Calico Consulting with President Tim O’Byrne instructing.

The conference is cosponsored by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, Animal Agriculture Alliance, Food Marketing Institute, National Council of Chain Restaurants, National Grocers Association, National Milk Producers Federation, National Pork Board, National Pork Producers Council and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

Attendees will put on their thinking caps during the keynote address when Colorado State University’s (CSU) popular philosopher Bernard Rollin challenges them to consider animal welfare from a variety of points of view in an interactive and engaging session. Rollin is a professor of philosophy, physiology and biophysics and director of bioethical planning at CSU. He is a recognized expert on animal research and agricultural regulations. A noted speaker and author of 10 books, including, "Animal Rights and Human Morality," Rollin developed and taught the first course ever offered on veterinary medical ethics.

Other conference instructors include the ever-popular Temple Grandin, Ph.D. of CSU, John McGlone, Ph.D. of Texas Tech University, Dave Meisinger Ph.D., and Anna Johnson, Ph.D., of the National Pork Board; Jim Stonehocker of Odom’s Tennessee Pride; Kay Johnson of the Animal Agriculture Alliance; Elena Metro of the American Humane Association/Free Farmed; Adele Douglass of Humane Farm Animal Care/Certified Humane; Mike Ellis, of University of Illinois and John Scanga, Ph.D., of CSU.

During the Management and Policy track, attendees will learn about preventing unwanted surveillance and using closed circuit TV to monitor animal handling; new developments in transporting livestock; humane certification programs; the challenge posed by the animal rights movement; getting the most out of animal welfare audits; and communicating effectively about animal welfare to customers and the public.

During the Cattle and Pig Handling tracks, attendees will learn about the AMI Foundation’s animal handling and auditing guidelines, which will be updated and re-released in advance of the conference; basic and advanced handling; stunning; spotting veterinary problems and ensuring humane transport and offloading of livestock.

The conference also will feature its very popular evening featuring exhibits of equipment and services on Wednesday evening, Feb. 9.

Discounted member registration rates are available to all members of sponsoring organizations. Early bird member registration before Dec. 31, 2004, is $325 or $295 when three members register early together. After that date and on-site, registration is $425 or $325 when three or more members register together. Non-members pay $450 and students pay $75. Registration for the hog and cattle transportation training sessions is $125 for members and $225 for non-members.
