American Meat Institute Commends Thorough USDA Investigation into Beef Shipment to Japan

Friday, February 17, 2006

The following statement should be attributed to J. Patrick Boyle, President and CEO, American Meat Institute:

“We commend the USDA for the thoroughness of the reports filed by the Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Office of the Inspector General. This thorough, comprehensive, 475 page report confirms that this shipment of beef was the result of an isolated and inadvertent error made by the exporter, a U.S. government inspector, and the Japanese importer.

Importantly, the report reaffirms that the product shipped to Japan posed no food safety threat. The USDA inspection and export verification system is comprehensive, and has been enhanced with additional training and plant audits as part of the plan announced by Secretary of Agriculture Johanns immediately following the discovery of the shipment of the product at issue.

We urge the government of Japan to end the suspension of beef imports from the U.S. and to resume beef trade as soon as possible. U.S. beef is amongst the finest and safest in the world, and should be a purchase option for Japanese consumers.”
