Environmental Policy Expert Sherry Edwards Joins American Meat Institute Legislative Affairs Team

American Meat Institute (AMI) President J. Patrick Boyle today announced that environmental policy expert Sherry L. Edwards will join the Institute February 22 as director of legislative and regulatory affairs.

In addition to responsibilities for managing environmental issues impacting meat and poultry processors, Edwards will lobby Congress and the Executive Branch on a range of other industry issues. She will serve as the staff liaison to AMI’s Environmental Committee and will manage AMI’s Political Education Committee. Edwards will report to Sara Lilygren, senior vice president of legislative and public affairs.

Previously, Edwards was director of public policy at the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association in Washington, DC. There she directed public policy programs on a host of environmental issues and was chief spokesperson on air, hazardous waste, regulatory reform and sustainable development issues.

She also served on the President’s Council on Sustainable Development’s Chemical Operations Team and was a charter member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Chemical Sectors Strategic Planning Group.

Earlier in her career, Edwards was a legislative assistant at Shaw, Pittman, Potts and Trowbridge. She also served as Deputy Director of Scheduling for Cabinet Secretaries at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and was a staffer at the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and for former U.S. Senator Mack Mattingly of Georgia.

She received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and her master’s degree in public affairs from the University of Connecticut.
