AMERICAN MEAT INSTITUTE NAMED ‘ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR' BY AMERICA’S SECOND HARVEST

Thursday, October 24, 2002

New Orleans, LA, October 24, 2002 - The American Meat Institute (AMI) today was named Association of the Year by America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief organization.

AMI was honored for its longstanding support of America's Second Harvest through its “Meating the Need” program. The award was presented at AMI’s Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase, October 24-26 in New Orleans, LA.

Since 1989, AMI members have donated more than 40 million pounds of surplus meat and poultry products to food banks nationwide. This year, AMI members pledged to increase donation levels by ten percent over the next two years. In addition, AMI is lending support to America’s Second Harvest in an effort to pass the CARE Act, which would simplify and enhance the deductibility of donations.

“We are honored to be named Association of the Year,” said AMI President J. Patrick Boyle. “As an industry that helps create the most abundant and affordable food supply anywhere in the world, the growing problem of hunger in America is simply unacceptable. We are proud to partner with Second Harvest in the fight to end hunger in America.”

America’s Second Harvest provided emergency food assistance to more than 23 million hungry Americans last year, including nine million children and more than two million seniors. AMI represents the interests of packers and processors of beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout North America. Together, AMI's members produce 95 percent of the beef, pork, lamb and veal products and 70 percent of the turkey products in the U.S. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Institute provides legislative, regulatory, public relations, technical, scientific and educational services to the industry. Its affiliate, the AMI Foundation, is a separate 501(c)3 organization that conducts research, education and information projects for the industry.
