AMI Will Hold Epidemiology Meeting to Help Companies Prepare for Investigations

Washington, DC-The American Meat Institute (AMI) will hold a one-day workshop about epidemiological investigations January 15, 2002, at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, GA.

The course, titled “Preparing Your Company for an Investigation: What the Industry Needs to Know About Epidemiology,” will be taught by epidemiologists, scientists and legal and public affairs experts who have been involved in these investigations. Participants will learn what to expect during an epidemiological investigation, how a company can help expedite it to ensure a smooth and rapid investigation and how the results will be used. Workshop leaders will give real world examples and provide insight into the latest scientific tools available.

The workshop will begin with a review of foodborne illness by Dr. Robert Tauxe, chief of Foodborne and Diarrheal Diseases Branch at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. During the morning session, the teaching team will take participants through a step-by-step, interactive experience covering epidemiology, DNA fingerprinting, government regulations, public affairs and legal liability.

Later, the team will review steps a company can take to prepare for investigations. In small break-out sessions, small groups will work through one of two case studies and face questioning from a mock investigative team.

The workshop is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. with a continental breakfast and wrap up after 5 p.m. with an evaluation of the material presented. A luncheon will be provided for participants.

The teaching team for the workshop will include: Mark Dopp, senior vice president, Regulatory Affairs, AMI; Henry Hubbard, senior vice president and partner, Fleishman-Hillard; Michael Kidney, partner, Hogan and Hartson, LLP; Melvin Kramer, Ph.D., MPH, president, EpiHealth Associates; Charles Lattuada, president, EQL, Inc.; Mansour Samadpour, Ph.D., assistant professor, University of Washington; and Martin Wiedmann, Ph.D., assistant professor, Cornell University.

Registration for the conference is $245 for members of AMI and other qualifying associations; $225 when three or more members register together; and $345 for non-members. Associations also eligible for the AMI member rate include: American Association of Meat Processors, American Frozen Foods Institute, National Chicken Council, National Food Processors Association, National Meat Association, National Meat Canners Association, National Turkey Federation and the North American Meat Processors Association.

Contact the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta before December 21, 2001, to reserve hotel rooms. After this date, rooms will be available on a space available basis. Mention AMI to receive a
special discounted rate of $189 for a single occupancy and $209 for a double occupancy.
