Dr. Randall Huffman receives the AMSA 2004 Achievement Award

Arlington, VA -- On June 23, 2004, Dr. Randall Huffman was honored with the 2004 Achievement Award from the American Meat Science Association (AMSA). The award was presented during the 57th Reciprocal Meat Conference in Lexington, Ky. Dr. Huffman is the vice president of scientific affairs for the American Meat Institute Foundation.

"It is truly an honor to receive this award from an organization such as the AMSA," said Huffman. "For over half a century AMSA and its members have provided scientific leadership that has led to dramatic improvements in the quality and safety of meat products. To be recognized by my peers within this organization is very rewarding and humbling."

The Achievement Award is presented annually to "young AMSA members who have demonstrated significant scientific skills in muscle foods research/technology, which contribute to the animal products industry and the American Meat Science Association". Huffman was recently elected to serve on AMSA's Board of Directors. He was also on the RMC program delivering an update on BSE for the conference.

Huffman had an early interest in agriculture, participating in Future Farmers of America and 4-H livestock projects, including the livestock and meat judging programs. After completing his formal education, Huffman began his career at Fairbank Farms serving as the company's Technical Service Director and later Vice President, Technical Services. Several years later, Huffman moved to Wichita Kan., where he was employed by Koch Industries, agricultural /beef division, where he was responsible for technical services for Koch Beef Company. Huffman has served in his current position with the AMI Foundation since Jan. 2000.

Huffman is a professional member of AMSA, Institute of Food Technologies, International Association of Food Protection; he also serves on the steering committee of the Meat Industry Research Conference for AMSA and AMI. He has published various journal articles, served as invited speaker and presenter regarding food safety and meat science. Huffman earned his B.S. degree in Animal Science from Auburn University. He went on to earn his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Animal Science, specializing in meat science, from University of Florida, Gainesville.

Two additional AMSA members received this year's Achievement Award: Rosemarie A. Nold, University of Nebraska and Duane M. Wulf, South Dakota State University. Other awardees honored at the conference include:

· Joseph C. Cordray, Iowa State University – Meat Processing Award
· Floyd K. McKeith, University of Illinois – Distinguished Research Award
· Ted H. Montgomery, West Texas A&M University – Distinguished Extension-Industry Service Award
· John A. Unruh, Kansas State University – Distinguished Teaching Award
· William G. Moody, University of Kentucky – R.C. Pollock Award

The American Meat Institute Foundation is a non-profit research, education and information foundation established by the American Meat Institute to study ways the meat and poultry industry can produce better, safer products and operate more efficiently.
