Statement of American Meat Institute President J. Patrick Boyle

Tuesday, May 4, 2004

I know I speak for the entire meat industry in expressing my deep sadness over the untimely death of Bob Peterson and in extending my condolences to the family he so loved.

Bob Peterson was an innovator and a visionary who built an Iowa packing operation into the largest beef and pork company in the world. He is among the greatest leaders our industry has ever known. His hard work, boundless energy and his focus on results literally helped redefine the industry over the last several decades.

Bob Peterson’s spirit lives on as Americans enjoy the safest, highest quality and most affordable meat in the world; the contributions he made to this bounty are real and enduring.

We are grateful that we had the opportunity to honor him publicly with the 2003 Industry Advancement Award, our Institute’s highest award.

Having known Bob as I did, I believe that he would ask us not to linger in our sadness over his passing, but rather to work harder to continually improve our industry and the products we provide to American families. That is the mission to which he devoted his life and that is how we should all strive to honor his memory.”
