AMIF, NMA to Host Series of Three Best Hiring Practices Workshops In Three Cities April 7, 8 and 10Wednesday, March 12, 2008
The American Meat Institute Foundation (AMIF)
and the National Meat Association (NMA)
together will present a series of three newly
developed ‘Best Hiring Practices’
educational workshops to educate industry
members about the laws and regulations related
to hiring practices.
This program is designed to teach attendees how to implement a best hiring practices program and to better understand compliance obligations. Those participating will learn how to use all available tools to ensure that potential hires are eligible to work in the U.S.
“We are pleased to offer this important program in three locations across the country,” said AMI President J. Patrick Boyle. “For many years, employers have found themselves doing a delicate balancing act. They strive to ensure that employees are eligible to work in the U.S. while at the same time, they must avoid any practices that could appear to be discriminatory based on race, gender or national origin. This workshop will help the members of our industry understand the status of rules governing hiring and best tools and practices available to them.”
The workshops will be held at the following locations:
• DePaul University O’Hare Campus in Des Plaines, Ill., on Monday April 7, 2008
• Hilton Kansas City Airport in Kansas City, Mo., on Tuesday April 8, 2008
• Hilton Orange County in Costa Mesa, Calif., on Thursday April 10, 2008
Employment attorney and expert in the field Monte B. Lake from Siff & Lake, LLP, will present information on government compliance assistance programs, the ‘no match’ rule and various state and local employment laws, Representatives from the Department of Homeland Security will present their best hiring practices and provide a detailed look at the E-verify program. The Department of Justice will educate attendees on how to avoid citizenship and national origin discrimination when verifying eligibility to work in the U.S.
“Meat companies face intense government scrutiny for immigration compliance activities and it is imperative that the workforce be fully vetted in accordance with the highest verification standards. These workshops are a crucial step to keep informed on what the best practices are and how to implement them,” said Barry Carpenter, National Meat Association CEO & executive director.
