Meat Buyer’s Guide Has USDA-CFIA Pilot Program Meat NamesFriday, February 21, 2014
Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency started a pilot program to harmonize nomenclature for commonly traded meat cuts.
The program allows processors in either country to ship products without having to label or re-box the product in accordance with prescriptive wholesale terms of the other country. Twenty-two wholesale meat cuts are in the program. Interested parties can find them listed in the online version of The NAMP Meat Buyer’s Guide® available at www.meatbuyersguide.com.
Harmonizing wholesale meat cut nomenclature is a task of the U.S.-Canadian Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC). The RCC was established in 2011 by U.S. President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and aims to reduce or eliminate unnecessary trade barriers. North American Meat Association (NAMA) coordinated the committees of U.S. and Canadian companies and the USDA and CFIA officials that developed the harmonized names for the RCC.
