FSIS Issues Clarification on Recording Slaughter Head Count in PHIS

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

(American Meat Institute)

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued Notice 40-13, which provides additional instructions to inspection program personnel (IPP) on how to correctly determine and record the "head count" representing the number of livestock slaughtered during each slaughter shift in the Public Health Information System (PHIS). The notice was issued following a data analysis suggesting that IPP are not consistently entering the correct number of head slaughtered in the "head count" box in PHIS. The head count should not include livestock condemned at ante-mortem inspection.
