Baucus Makes Trade Adjustment Assistance Renewal a Priority

Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) is planning a fresh effort push for renewed fast-track trade negotiating authority.  At a recent hearing, Baucus explicitly linked trade promotion authority (TPA), which provides for expedited consideration of trade deals, with trade adjustment assistance (TAA), which aids workers displaced by global trade.  "TPA and TAA are two sides of the same coin - making trade work," Baucus said. "We need to renew and extend both of them this year."
U.S. negotiators are hopeful about concluding the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement with almost a dozen Pacific Rim countries this year and with the European Union.  If U.S. negotiators are able to finalize those agreements, they must go through congress for approval.  With such a divided congress, fast-track trade negotiating authority is a hot topic in Washington.
