China Clarifies Ractopamine-free Certification Requirement.

Last Friday, Chinese food safety officials (AQSIQ) provided some details regarding the recently announced Ractopamine-free certification requirement for all imported meat products. The letter, sent in response to a USDA request, clarified that the March 1 deadline to comply with the new certification requirement refers to the shipment date of the product, rather than the arrival date at the Chinese port. Therefore, products that were shipped before March 1 will not be subject to the new requirement. The letter further indicates that this issue is one primarily between AQSIQ and the Chinese importers, enforced as part of the implementation of the Chinese Food Safety Law, and that the United States should not ship any product to China that does not meet their requirements.
