FSIS Survey: Number of Meat and Poultry Establishments with Food Defense Plans Up 10 Percent Since 2009

Seventy-two percent of meat and poultry establishments have a functional food defense plan in place, up from 62 percent in 2009, according to a 2010 Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) survey.

Ninety-seven percent of large plants have a plan in place, while 82 percent of small and 64 percent of very small establishments have a plan, respectively.

In 2010, FSIS made the voluntary adoption of food defense plans a performance objective. The target is for 90 percent of establishments to have a functional food defense plan by 2015.
