A joint Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)/U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prepublication Federal Register Notice currently available for public inspection and scheduled to publish tomorrow announces the availability of the final report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. This report will serve as the basis for a revision of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which HHS and USDA expect to publish later this year.

The prepublication notice announces a 30-day public comment process about the Committee’s report. Written comments must be received on or before 5:00 p.m. EDT on July 15, 2010. Instructions for submitting comments are available in the prepublication Federal Register Notice: http://www.federalregister.gov/OFRUpload/OFRData/2010-14324_PI.pdf.
Additionally, in order to solicit oral comments on the report, a public meeting will be held at 9:00 a.m. EDT on July 8, 2010 in the Jefferson Auditorium within the USDA South Building, located at the corner of Independence Ave. and 14th Street S.W., Washington, D.C.
Once made publicly available, AMI will carefully review the Committee’s report and provide comments if warranted.
AMI last week joined 23 food and beverage industry associations in a letter urging USDA and HHS co-executive secretaries for the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to release access to USDA’s Nutrition Evidence Library (NEL). Citing Office of Management and Budget guidelines, the letter states, “In anticipation of the release of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee technical report and subsequent public comment process, it is imperative for the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) to release access to the NEL report in the interest of transparency and compliance with the Data Quality Act.” To read the letter in its entirety, click here: http://bit.ly/bKWtOz.share on facebook share on twitter
