AMI Foundation Responds to Good Morning America Segment about Processed Meats

“Just as ABC chose to cite studies that raise concern about processed meat products, numerous other studies have shown different results,” notes a statement appearing on ABC News’ official Web site from AMI Foundation President James H. Hodges.  

ABC agreed to post the statement after a strongly worded letter of protest from Hodges expressing disturb and disappointment about a recent Good Morning America (GMA) segment on the topic of the alleged dangers of eating processed meats for school lunch.  “I think you owe it to your viewers and your online readers to do a follow-up story that includes all the facts and that omits the personal bias that so clearly punctuates the story,” commented Hodges in the letter.

 The segment noted that because of the presence of processed meats in school lunches, “Americans can be seriously endangering themselves or even killing themselves.”  The biased report was then followed by an interview between Diane Sawyer and Dr. Marie Savard to discuss the World Cancer Research Fund’s (WCRF) recommendations that all processed meat should be reduced or removed from children’s diets. 

AMIF’s statement points out that “based upon the total body of evidence, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend eating 5.5 ounces of meat per day as part of a healthy, balanced diet,” and the guidelines place “no restrictions on processed meats which play an important role in a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy products,” the statement adds.
