Senator Introduces Bill for Mandatory Meat and Poultry Recalls

This week Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) introduced S.1527, which would amend the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Poultry Products Inspection Act to authorize the Secretary of Agriculture to order the recall of meat and poultry products that are adulterated, misbranded, or otherwise unsafe.  

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), an agency within the USDA, inspects meat, poultry and processed egg products produced in federally inspected plants.  FSIS is responsible for ensuring that these products are safe, wholesome and accurately labeled. 

 Food recalls are voluntary actions taken by the manufacturer or distributor to protect the public from products that may cause adverse health problems or otherwise do not comply with a regulatory requirement and the purpose of the recall is to remove the product from commerce so it cannot be consumed.  Although meat and poultry recalls typically are initiated by the manufacturer or distributor of the meat or poultry, sometimes they occur at the request of FSIS.
