AMI Works to Set Record Straight on North American Flu, Telling Consumers That Pork Is Safe

AMI today released a number of materials designed to set the record straight on North American Flu, including a video message about pork safety from AMI President J. Patrick Boyle that can be accessed on AMI’s You Tube Channel, accessible at www.YouTube.com/MeatNewsNetwork.

 In addition, AMI has posted a statement, a series of consumer questions and answers and audio sound bites on its consumer Web site www.meatsafety.org.

 AMI’s reassuring comments echo those from public health officials like Dr Keiji Fukuda, Assistant Director-General ad. Interim for Health Security and Environment at the World Health Organization, who yesterday said publicly, “I want to say very clearly. Right now we have no evidence to suggest that people are getting exposed or getting infected from exposure to pork or to pigs. Right now we have zero evidence to suspect that exposure to meat leads to infections.”

 The Institute welcomed a statement from the World Animal Health Organization (OIE), which said, "The virus has not been isolated in animals to date.  Therefore it is not justified to name this disease swine influenza," the Paris-based organization said.  It suggested North American Flu was a more accurate description. 

A number of global trading partners have announced bans and restrictions on pork imports in the face of  influenza news.  AMI is urging U.S. officials to work for an expeditious resolution of these unfounded actions.
