The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) held a meeting December 19 for packers that the agency believes will be subject to mandatory price reporting when the rule becomes effective January 30, 2001.
AMS officials explained the rule's
provisions, as well as the information
technology system that has been developed to
accommodate packer reporting. Agency officials
also entertained numerous questions from
industry regarding the rule and how it will be
implemented. Those questions addressed issues
ranging from compliance considerations to
requests for elaboration regarding definitions
included in the rule.
AMS officials were unable to answer many of the
questions raised, but committed to providing
answers in writing to the industry as soon as
possible. AMS intends to post on its website
the questions raised during the meeting and the
answers to those questions.
