AMI, Other Groups Support AgTrade Coalition Efforts

Thursday, June 21, 2001

Trade Promotion Authority is essential to the success of a new round of WTO global trade negotiations, AMI President J. Patrick Boyle said at a press conference today at USDA.
Boyle joined Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman and leaders of five other agriculture/agribusiness groups today in stressing the importance of TPA in relation to the launch of a new round of WTO global trade negotiations. The associations have come together in support of "AgTrade: A U.S. Coalition to Promote Agricultural Trade." AgTrade co-chair Chuck Connor also joined the press conference.
Boyle cited a recent USDA report that found that global agricultural tariffs average an astounding 62 percent – compared with only 4 percent for manufactured goods. Meanwhile, U.S. agricultural tariffs average 12 percent, the lowest average in the world. Leaders of American Farm Bureau Federation, National Milk Producers Federation, National Pork Producers Council, USA Rice Federation and Grocery Manufacturers of America also made remarks at the press conference.
