AMI Backs "Normal Trade Relations" for China

Thursday, June 7, 2001

In a June 5 letter sent to Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), AMI joined with 69 other business and agriculture organizations in urging the Speaker to continue to exercise strong leadership in extending normal trade relations with China. As reported by Inside AMI on June 4, President Bush formally notified the Speaker and the President of the Senate on June 1 he intends to extend China’s normal trade relations status. Congress now has 60 days to disapprove the President’s proposed action. Another rancorous debate and a vote, at least in the House, is expected. A copy of the 70-strong coalition letter is available at: http://www.meatinstitute.org/Template.cfm?Section=ChinaPNTR&NavMenuID=162&template=TaggedContentFile.cfm&NewsID=411
