This week’s Feedstuffs features an editorial cartoon that demonstrates the long term, and far reaching economic and social consequences of the prolonged border closure with Canada. The American Meat Institute has long argued that the embargo is causing permanent, structural changes in the American cattle and meatpacking and processing industries. Plants that were constructed in Northern tier states because of the ready access to Canadian cattle are working shorter shifts, with some closing permanently. This will cause an overall constriction in all related sectors of the beef industry in the United States, leaving breadwinners for many American families without a reliable and good paying job.
