Agriculture Secretary Outlines Food Safety Priorities

Wednesday, April 18, 2001

In comments made at a conference in Washington today, Agriculture Secretary Ann M.Veneman encouraged a cooperative approach to food safety integrating research, public health regulation and education to help form effective public policy.
Veneman also voiced support for Fight BAC!, an education campaign in which AMI played a leading role. She said the program is a good example of an effective public/private education partnership which the agency will encourage during her tenure. The Fight BAC! education campaign promotes the four basic food safety rules for consumers - clean, separate, cook and chill.
USDA also will work to ensure all food safety policies are based on sound scientific principles, she said.
