AMI Members Can Search On-Line for Second Harvest Food Banks

AMI members seeking to contribute surplus meat and poultry products through AMI's "Meating the Need" program may now search America's Second Harvest website to locate local food banks.

America's Second Harvest is the nation's largest domestic charitable feeding program, distributing more than a billion pounds of donated food and grocery products annually. With a network of more than 200 food banks and food rescue programs which serve all 50 states and Puerto Rico, America's Second Harvest distributes more than a billion pounds of donated food and grocery products annually to more than 26 million hungry Americans.

AMI's "Meating the Need" program links AMI members to their regional food Banks that are part of the Second Harvest network. Meat and poultry products are the most desired and least often contributed products. Still, in 2000 alone, AMI members who participated in the program donated more than 10.9 million pounds of surplus meat and poultry products for Second Harvest food banks – up an amazing 400 percent from the two million pounds donated in 1989, the first year of the program. The federal "Good Samaritan Law" protects companies who donate wholesome, but unsaleable food products to 401 c 3 not for profit organizations.

If your company is interested in making a tax-deductible donation of surplus meat or poultry products to the "Meating the Need" campaign, visit http://www.secondharvest.org/foodbanks/foodbanks.html.
