Listeria Monocytogenes Draft Risk Assessment and Risk Management Action Plan AvailabilityThursday, January 18, 2001
The FDA and FSIS made a pre-publication announcement today of their joint Listeria risk assessment and risk management action plan. The draft risk assessment addresses the relationship between foodborne Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) and human health in 20 ready-to-eat food categories. The risk management action plan identifies specific preventive strategies based on the Lm risk assessment. This action by FDA and FSIS is in response to the President's direction this past spring to regulatory agencies to develop action plans to reduce the incidence of listeriosis by 50 percent by 2005. FDA and FSIS are inviting comments on the risk management strategies reflected in the action plan. Comments must be submitted by March 20, 2001. A public meeting will be announced in a future issue of the Federal Register to discuss the documents. AMI understands that the documents exceed 400 pages in length and therefore copies will not be available through AMI. Copies of the documents may be obtained by faxing your name and mailing address with the names of the documents you are requesting (see above) to the CFSAN Outreach and Information Center at 1-877-366-3322. Additionally the documents are available electronically at www.cfsan.fda.gov or www.fsis.usda.gov.
