Agriculture/Agribusiness Groups' Letter Urging TPA Action Presented to Senate at Rally

Tuesday, June 26, 2001

A letter signed by a broad coaltion of agricultural/agribusiness groups and individual companies urging Congress to act quickly on trade promotion authority was formally presented to senators today at a rally outside the U.S. Capitol. AMI and other trade associations are part of the coalition aimed at getting TPA passed and signed into law before the WTO Ministerial Meeting in November.
This month, President Bush introduced TPA legislation into the House, which has thus far taken no action on the bill.
In the letter to Congress, AMI and others urge the swift adoption of TPA legislation, saying the U.S. has already lost a "great deal of ground in the international trade arena" without this authority.
Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Chuck Hagel (R-NE), Pat Roberts (R-KS), Ben Nelson (D-NE) and House Agriculture Ranking Democrat Charles Stenholm (D-TX) also attended the event and emphasized foreign markets as the number one way to strengthen U.S. agriculture.
