European Commission Updates Factsheet on EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement.

The European Commission released an updated fact sheet detailing opportunities for the EU meat sector resulting from implementation of the EU-Japan Economic Trade Partnership (EPA). According to the factsheet, Japan will phase out, under the EPA, its ad valorem duties for fresh, chilled, and frozen pork cuts, and significantly reduce the level of the gate price. The pork meat sector will remain safeguarded for a limited period under the EPA, but these safeguard systems will gradually be eliminated after 11 years. In the case of processed pork meat, ad valorem duties will be gradually phased out over a period of 11 years. For bovine meat, tariffs on EU exports to Japan will fall from 38.5% to 9% over 15 years. Base rate tariffs between 7.7% and 10.8% on EU exports of poultry meat will be phased out after 5 to 10 years.
