U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced last week that USDA will relocate the Economics Research Service (ERS) and National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to the Kansas City Region. USDA conducted a Cost Benefit Analysis and found the relocations would save nearly $300 million nominally over a 15-year lease term on employment costs and rent. The savings will go toward more research of critical needs like rural prosperity and agricultural competitiveness, and for long-time retainment of programs and employees. The main reasons for the relocation, according to a USDA press release, are to improve USDA's ability to attract qualified staff with training and interest in agriculture, to place USDA resources closer to stakeholders, and to benefit the American taxpayers. Secretary Perdue sent a letter to all USDA employees and held a meeting with ERS and NIFA employees to discuss the decision, the process and next steps.
