By June 30, 2019, Massachusetts employers must provide notice to all employees and some independent contractors about the upcoming Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) law. PFML is both a leave law and a benefits law, which means it requires employers to give employees job-protected leave, and also guarantees employees and some self-employed individuals benefits while they are away from work. Employers are required to understand both the leave and benefits aspects of the law, and most private sector employers in Massachusetts with one or more employees must comply. The Massachusetts Department of Family and Medical Leave created a guide to the PFML law, including a timeline, employer responsibilities and more, which can be found here. The Department also issued updated draft regulations, which are set to take effect July 1, 2019. Payroll deductions will begin July 1, 2019, and employees will be eligible to receive benefits on Jan. 1, 2021.
