NAMI Submits Comments to APHIS on Animal Disease Compartments Proposal

Tuesday, June 4, 2019

(North American Meat Institute)

The Meat Institute submitted comments today to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) supporting its proposed rule , "Evaluation and Recognition of the Animal Health Status of Compartments." The rule, posted to the Federal Register on April 3, aims to establish standards allowing APHIS to recognize compartments for animal disease status, consistent with the international standards of the World Organization for Animal Health. The proposed rule would allow APHIS to conduct a disease risk assessment - based on a list of eight factors that closely parallel regionalization evaluation assessments - when a foreign government submits a request for recognition of a compartment. APHIS hopes these proposed standards would provide a toll that may be used to preserve international trade when regionalization is not possible. Today, June 3 is the last day to submit comments. More information on the proposed rule can be found here .
