The Mexican Senate last week approved a major labor reform law, as required by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The law will overhaul Mexico's existing labor structure by ensuring workers can organize independent unions and have secret votes when selecting representation, among other changes. Many U.S. Democratic lawmakers, however, have expressed they will want to see how Mexico implements this labor law before providing support for USMCA ratification. Other lawmakers, including Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), have indicated the U.S.'s steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico must be lifted before USMCA can pass.
