NAMI To Submit Comments on FSIS’s Guideline to Customer Complaints.Monday, May 6, 2019

The Meat Institute is submitting comments to USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), recommending changes to the agency’s Guideline for Industry Response to Customer Complaints. “The guideline aptly clarifies several key regulatory requirements; however, some requirements and expectations are unclear when considering the totality of the document,” Director of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Casey Gallimore wrote in the comments to FSIS. The Meat Institute provided several suggestions to improve the guidance in an effort to reduce confusion within the industry and among FSIS personnel.
The guideline is intended to help the meat and poultry industry develop written programs to respond to customer complaints of adulterated or misbranded meat and poultry products. FSIS created the guideline in response to an increase in recalls of meat and poultry products contaminated with foreign materials. FSIS issued the document to assist all FSIS-regulated establishments that slaughter or further process inspected meat and poultry products to develop and implement procedures for responding to customer complaints to prevent recurrence of similar product adulteration or misbranding events.
FSIS posted the guideline in the Federal Register in March, and invited public comments due by May 10, 2019.
