U.S. Suspends China Tariff Hike Until Further Notice

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative suspended a scheduled tariff increase on $200 billion in Chinese imports to the U.S. until further notice, following President Donald Trump’s decision to delay his March 1 deadline for a U.S.-China trade deal amid progress in the negotiations. Tariffs on those Chinese imports were slated to increase from 10 to 25 percent on March 2. During his testimony last week before the House Ways and Means Committee, however, Ambassador Robert Lighthizer said the U.S. will need to maintain the threat of imposing tariffs on Chinese goods for years, even if negotiators from both countries strike a deal to end their ongoing trade dispute. Lighthizer contended the use of tariffs is the Administration’s principal tool to ensure China implements, and complies with, major structural changes.
