The law firm Hogan Lovells prepared a memorandum detailing USDA and the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recent announcement proposing a joint regulatory framework to oversee cell-cultured meat. The memo also summarizes the joint USDA and FDA public meeting on the topic held in October.
Under the proposed framework, FDA plans to oversee cell collection, cell banks, cell growth and cell differentiation, whereas USDA will oversee cell harvest, production and labeling of food products derived from the cells of livestock and poultry. Although technical details of the framework remain undefined, USDA and FDA stated the Administration does not believe legislation on this topic is necessary because USDA and FDA have the statutory authority to appropriately regulate cell-cultured food products derived from livestock and poultry.share on facebook share on twitter
