USDA, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration last week signed a joint agency agreement launching the “Winning on Reducing Food Waste” initiative, which aims to improve coordination and communication across federal agencies to better educate Americans on the impacts and importance of reducing food loss and waste. This initiative complements the ongoing work of the U.S. Food Loss and Waste 2030 Champions initiative, which, through public-private partnerships, seeks a 50 percent reduction in food waste by 2030. In the U.S., food waste accounts for approximately 30-40 percent of the food supply, and is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills.
