The Meat Institute signed a multi-association letter urging the House of Representatives to pass expeditiously the Senate-approved version of the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB) Act of 2018. The House, in January, approved its version of the legislation in a 402 to 0 vote. If passed, the MTB would temporarily eliminate and ultimately reduce border taxes on a set of products that have been found through a transparent and rigorous process not to be produced at all, or in sufficient capacity, in the U.S. In the letter, the organizations cite analysis by the National Association of Manufacturers, which concluded the MTB would eliminate import tariffs of nearly $1 million per day through 2020, amounting to total savings of almost $800 million.
