Meat Institute Joins Multi-Association Letter Advocating for a National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program

(North American Meat Institute)

The Meat Institute joined more than 100 organizations representing animal agriculture in urging Senate Farm Bill conferees to fully fund a National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program. Although both the House and Senate versions of the Farm Bill include a National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program, proposed funding for the new program, in the early stages of Farm Bill development, did not reach adequate levels, according to the letter. The organizations, therefore, request Senate conferees to provide permanent, full funding to address risks to animal health while likewise bolstering the long-term ability of U.S. animal agriculture to be competitive in the global marketplace. The organizations state that outbreaks of foreign animal disease, such as foot and mouth disease or avian influenza, have the ability to cripple the entire agricultural sector and create long-lasting ramifications for the economic viability of U.S. aquaculture, livestock and poultry production.
