USDA Proposes Structural Changes to ERS, NIFA

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced additional changes to USDA’s structure as part of the Administration’s ongoing reorganization efforts. USDA will realign the Economic Research Service (ERS), currently housed under the Research, Education and Economics mission area, with the Office of the Chief Economist. In addition, most employees of ERS and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) will be relocated outside of Washington, DC – a process that is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. USDA has not yet selected the new office locations, but said it is possible the two agencies could eventually be co-located. USDA is pursuing these changes for several reasons, including improving ERS and NIFA's ability to hire and retain employees — many of whom apply after graduating from land-grant universities far from Washington, DC – with training and interests in agriculture.
