The Senate last week agreed by voice vote to go to conference with the House of Representatives to negotiate the Farm Bill before the current legislation expires September 30, 2018. The House earlier in July voted by unanimous consent to proceed to conference with the Senate. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) selected 47 conferees for the committee. Nine senators were appointed to the conference committee. They include Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS), Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), John Boozman (R-AR), John Hoeven (R-ND) and Joni Ernst (R-IA).

Sens. Roberts and Stabenow last month met with House Agriculture Committee Chairman Michael Conaway (R-TX) and Ranking Member Collin Peterson (D-MN) to begin Farm Bill discussions. Informal, staff level negotiations between the House and Senate will take place throughout August, with formal negotiations expected to begin later in the month.

The House and Senate recently both passed separate versions of the Farm Bill, clearing the legislation to move to a conference committee, where lawmakers will work to reconcile differences in the two bills
