The House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee last week held a hearing examining the effects of tariffs on U.S. agriculture and rural communities. Witnesses said tariffs were hindering exports and creating an oversupply of products in the U.S. market, forcing down prices. Witnesses also indicated the tariffs would force U.S. businesses to lay off workers, thereby straining agricultural and rural communities throughout the country. Most of the discussion focused on the escalating trade dispute with China, and the impact of retaliatory measures for U.S. agriculture resulting from those actions.
