House Votes to Proceed to Farm Bill Conference Committee

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

(North American Meat Institute)

The House of Representatives last week voted by unanimous consent to go to conference with the Senate to negotiate the Farm Bill. The House and Senate recently both passed separate versions of the Farm Bill, clearing the legislation to move to a conference committee, where lawmakers will work to reconcile differences in the two bills. The Senate is likely to vote this week on a motion to proceed to conference.

Meat Institute staff worked successfully with members of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees to ensure provisions of concern to Institute members – country-of-origin labeling, date labeling, interstate shipment of state inspected meat, industry structure and GIPSA, among others – were not included in the bills that passed. The Meat Institute will continue to engage members of Congress and key staff during conference to ensure that no adverse provisions are added to the resulting legislation. The current Farm Bill expires September 30, 2018.
