President Donald Trump announced he intends to move ahead with plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on foreign autos ahead of the 2018 midterm elections. The tariffs, which would be levied on cars, trucks and auto parts from U.S. competitors like Europe and Japan, would be in addition to tariffs the Administration imposed on steel and aluminum imports to the U.S. Before the Administration can proceed to impose tariffs, the Commerce Department must first conclude its investigation into whether imports of automobiles and auto parts pose a risk to national security – an investigation the department aims to wrap up by late July or August. In 2017, auto and auto part imports to the U.S. totaled $228 billion.
