FDA Considering Revised Approach to Declaration of Added Sugars

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reviewing more than 3,000 comments in response to its draft guidance regarding the declaration of added sugars on product labels such as pure maple syrup and pure honey. The guidance advised food manufacturers about FDA's intent to exercise enforcement discretion to allow the use of an obelisk symbol, “†,” on the Nutrition Facts label immediately after the added sugars percent Daily Value information on containers of pure maple syrup or pure honey. The obelisk symbol directs consumers to language outside the Nutrition Facts label to provide contextual information about the meaning of “added sugars” for these specific products. FDA, however, received feedback signaling the approach to declaring added sugars proposed in the the draft guidance does not provide the clarity the agency intended. FDA said it would work with industry to devise an alternate solution.
