The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is seeking public comments regarding the proposed rule to establish the National Bioengineered (BE) Food Disclosure Standard mandated by Congress in 2016. The proposed rule would require food manufacturers and other entities that label foods for retail sale to disclose information about BE food and BE food ingredient content. According to AMS, the proposed rule is intended to provide consumers a mandatory uniform national standard for information about the BE status of foods. Most basic meat and poultry products, such as muscle cuts, ground product and processed product, in which the predominant ingredient is meat or poultry, would be exempt from the new standard. Comments on the proposed rule are due by July 3, 2018. The Meat Institute prepared a memo summarizing the rule.
