Meat Institute Seeks Member Feedback on WHO’s Draft Guidelines for Saturated and Trans Fat

The Meat Institute is soliciting member input regarding the World Health Organization’s (WHO) draft guidelines on saturated fatty acid and trans-fatty acid intake for adults and children. The Meat Institute will incorporate member feedback in comments that will be submitted to WHO by June 1. Member comments are due to Director of Regulatory and Scientific Affairs KatieRose McCullough, Ph.D., by May 25.

Earlier this month, WHO issued draft guidelines that recommend adults and children consume no more than 10 percent of calories from saturated fat and only one percent or less of calories from trans fats. The guidelines are intended to provide recommendations regarding the intake of saturated fatty acids and trans-fatty acids to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases in adults and children, according to WHO. The draft guidelines will concurrently undergo peer-review by an external expert group. Once the peer-review and public consultation are complete, the guidelines will be finalized and reviewed by the WHO Guidelines Review Committee for final clearance prior to its official release.
